ABOUT ABOUT

Lawn jockeys and hitching posts, depending on the viewer, are a symbol of varied and, sometimes, contradictory meanings. The National Sporting Library & Museum will navigate through the muddied waters of history to explore long-held beliefs and uncover these objects' true story. A panel of specialists will discuss how, when, and in what context they were made. Join us at the Library for an evening of mythbusting with Carol Grissom, Senior Objects Conservator at the Smithsonian Institution and author of Zinc Sculpture in America: 1850 to 1950; Professor Kenneth Goings, Professor Emeritus in the Department of African American and African Studies at The Ohio State University and author of Mammy and Uncle Moses: Black Collectibles and American Stereotyping; Mary Thompson, Research Historian at George Washington’s Mt. Vernon and author of  “The Only Unavoidable Subject of Regret”: George Washington, slavery, and the Enslaved Community at Mount Vernon; and moderator Claudia Pfeiffer, the Deputy Director & George L. Orhstrom Jr., Curator at the NSLM.

The panelists' discussion will be followed by a Q&A.

Free for NSLM Members, donations to NSLM programming, exhibitons, and collections care for non-members.

This program will be held on Zoom. A Zoom link will be sent to you at least 72 hours after reserving your tickets. For questions please contact [email protected] or call 540-687-6542 x 25
